Journeys Way - Serving the Senior Population

Journey’s Way, Resources & Programs for People 55+, has volunteering opportunities for people who have a heart for helping older folks. Journey’s Way is a division of Intercommunity Action, the Roxborough-based social service agency commonly known as Interac.  There are two ways to get involved with Journey's Way: (1) serving directly with seniors in their homes or (2) volunteering in the Senior Community Center on Ridge Ave.

Journey’s Way launched a neighborhood-service program specially for residents of Roxborough, Manayunk and East Falls. They are lining up neighborhood volunteers to help older homeowners in our locality in three specific ways:
        ●    Performing light chores
        ●    Providing rides to the doctor, pharmacy etc.
        ●    Making regular 'friendly' calls to check in on isolated seniors
You could sign up to help provide one, two or all of those services. Friendly-visitor volunteers would be expected to make phone calls at least weekly, and other volunteers would be in a pool of volunteers on standby to help as requests from individual clients come in, so volunteering would be intermittent – and you would be free to decline a given request if it conflicts with your schedule.

The Center at Journey’s Way, a senior community center at 6012 Ridge in Roxborough, has a number of volunteer openings on the premises: Kitchen and dining room help in the mornings, particularly Mondays and Tuesdays.  Assistance in the Adult Day Care unit, helping staff with clients who have physical or cognitive limitations. Data entry, inputting records into our computer database. Fitness Center assistant and/or instructor. Lecturers, instructors, performers, program assistants for classes, trips, special events, etc.

If you are interested in any of these valuable roles, contact the Journey’s Way Volunteer Coordinator, Jim Remsen, at (215) 487-1750, ext. 3031, or jremsen@intercommunityaction.org. He can provide details and send along application material.

Northern Home for Children

Individual Opportunities - Volunteers are needed for a variety of services to the Northern Home for Children including the Tutorial Club, Special Skills Club, Juniors and Seniors Support Club, Transportation Club, and Mentoring Club.

Group Opportunities - This program is designed for corporate groups and organizations that wish to be involved in a "day of service." Whether your group has 10, 20, 50 or 100 ambitious volunteers, there are always projects available to meet your organizational needs. Corporate volunteering is a tremendous way to bring your team together in a truly positive way. At the same time, you will be making a difference in the lives of children who will truly benefit from your help and generosity.

Day of Service Projects include:
        ●    Painting the bedrooms and dining rooms in our children's residential facility.
        ●    Painting the children's gymnasium.
        ●    Painting the hallways, classrooms, and offices.
        ●    Painting the dining room and kitchen of the children's cafeteria.
        ●    Painting the Activities Center.
        ●    Landscaping and improving the four acre grounds at the site of NHCFS.
        ●    Landscaping the area around the children's garden.
        ●    Planting vegetables within the children's garden.
        ●    Organizations may also be involved in a "Children's Outing Day"
        ●    Organizations may also team up once a week to help tutor children

Our volunteer program for corporate groups is an extremely rewarding experience for your team of volunteers. It provides tremendous help for our agency and the children we serve. It also builds and bonds team support within your organization. The hours for our day of service projects are flexible but generally begin at 9:00 AM and finish up around 2:00 PM. Generally, service projects are done on Saturdays or Sundays. However, we will be happy to have your volunteer outing during the week. Most of the projects take place on the agency's grounds at 5301 Ridge Avenue in Roxborough, Philadelphia.

When you have decided how you would like to volunteer please contact Kevin Weber at 215.482.1423 x1299 or volunteers@northernhome.org.
